When opposites occupy one household

First.. thank you to all who commented on my Fibro post the other day - your input is so appreciated as I navigate this -thing-.   I'm changing my diet to stay away from gluten, dairy and pork, I'm going to lose that damned 15 lbs and I am continuing to work out, even when it hurts.  I'm talking a magnesium supplement and I am going to try like heck to get more sleep and less stress.

Speaking of which.... the post title.  *sigh   I love my husband, he's got many good qualities.  We all have some crap qualities too, and with luck and effort we manage to find balance and happiness most of the time with our chosen partners.  When it comes to politics, we in this house are polar opposites on some very important things.  And yet we agree on others.  He is a dyed in the wool Republican, I am unaffiliated.  I believe the party system divides us further, and what this nation does not need is further division.  ( Man, the headlines lately.  Not even going there, we're all sick over it.)

We are so divided on some big issues, that we have vowed not to talk politics with each other, period.  How far do you think that got us?   It's just about impossible, and leads to some pretty heated discussions.  Neither of us is going to change the others mind, so the arguing is futile.  And yet.   Have you ever looked at your significant other  with disgust and thought.... how can he/she possibly think that way?    I'm sure my husband has the same thoughts about me on occasion.  What is most damaging is when the person you have chosen to share your life with treats your ideas as if they are ridiculous and without any value or berates your intelligence just because your views are different than his/hers.  I try not to do that, but I don't always succeed. Neither does my other half.  Wouldn't it be awesome if those in the BIG HOUSE could figure out how to debate and find solutions for the BIG STUFF  without doing the same.   And yet...

The Dog Days Of Summer are here... nothing like the A/C to keep those dogs cool.

Three little eggs in the nest made in a wreath on my front door.  One hatched so far...

Hoping you are all finding peace of mind in the lazy days of Summer and may there we Peace on this restless earth once and for all...........

Just Sayin-

  1. Karen,

I'm not going to comment on the politics that are driving discussions in your household, but I do understand the feelings behind those kinds of family divides. It would be very difficult not to even have a glimmer of understanding about what is driving your best beloved's affiliation with a person or party that you don't share empathy or intellectual fealty to. I hope the next months go by quickly for you both.

  2. My husband and I are on the same page but our families are polar opposites from us. It can be challenging but mostly we just ignore them when they bring up political talk.

  3. no peace of mind here. I find I actually put my hand in front of my face as I channel surf and suddenly something ugly and orange appears. lol I loved to talk politics with folks in the good old days but no longer. With today's idiots my blood boils and with the like minded my blood pressure rises as we spew out frustration. Best stick to my studio and keep busy with fabrics and paper. :D

  4. Dave was a Libertarian and I'm so conservative I make Ronald Reagan look like a tree hugger. Because it was Dave's money that kept us going, I deferred to him, mostly. When I didn't, he listened to me, I listened to him and we were always respectful of each other, even when we didn't agree.
I know he couldn't stand the Clinton's nor Obama and, as a veteran, it galled him every time either of them came on television. If I had my way, NO ONE could be POTUS if they've never served in the military.
We haven't had a good choice for POTUS in a very long while but I'll vote for Trump as a vote against that lying, undeserving witch Clinton.
She gave up Christopher Stevens and our military as much as if she'd pulled the trigger. I'd love to know what she got in the trade for Stevens. As Churchill said, "Even a paranoid has real enemies."
Oh well, Back to the tractor and mowing the upper pasture.

  5. I can't talk to my sister-in-law and brother about politics. They seem mentally deranged and completely out of touch with reality. My SIL loves a good argument, but I'll go home rather than listen to her views. That annoys her, but I feel like she's damaging our relationship; when she starts up, it's like I don't even know her any more, and she's been around since I was 8 years old.

  7. This election is just another example of how heated and nasty the race for President of our country can get. The 24-hour availability of other people's opinions on the situation makes it SEEM as if this is the worst one yet. Remember, most of the information we see and absorb is OPINION, not objective facts. We are bombarded by voices and talking heads that are trying to convince us to think their way ... all it succeeds in doing is feeding our stress. Let it go. (Have you stopped to think that it's probably that huge helping of Italian on both sides of your marriage that helped derail your truce?)

It took a while for me to get comfortable with my boycott of most news, but it's been one of the best decisions that I can remember. What we hear and see becomes part of us, and I refuse to let most of the news 'reporting' have space inside of my head. I prefer to think about what I can do to take control of what I do with my life, instead of spending time on things over which I have no control ... politics is one of those things. My control comes on election day. Other than that, I let it go.

You have a lot going on, and I hope you can find a way to make a smoother journey for yourself. Remember, you have a friend down here in Virginia. Soul sistas, always.

  8. Karen you have struck a chord today. My husband and I have been together for 34 years and I don't think we have ever been as divided as we are over this election. He stands firm even with three female voters under his roof. I feel like a referee most of the time. The four of us have had some very heated discussions about the direction of this country. My hard and fast rule for everyone is that no one be disrespectful to each other. We aspired to raise strong, smart independent women and it appears we have succeeded. I do not know what will come in November but, whatever the outcome, this election will divide many families.

Stay inside this weekend as it's going to be a hot one for us. Humidity wreaks havoc with fibro!

  9. Boy would I be tempted to just lay down with the dogs and snooze the day away. Nothing like politics to get people all riled up.

  10. I'm no expert on anything, especially politics but I have to agree about the "news outlets"; either just putting their opinions out there; now that stuff I skip over. I mean they want to sell "news", but they are not smarter than I am (I don't think), they just need to write words to keep their jobs, or hear themselves talk. I like to make up my own mind, not argue with anyone (oh, of course except the voices in my head that like to argue.) LOL

Have fun on your vacation. Geez Louise, I leave for a few days and they you are - I truly hope you're all having a wonderful time.
    xoxo
