Taking a knee, those ugly tweets, and a magical night on the water

Oooh boy.... If you still come by here often enough, you know how a feel about most things I've covered in posts.   I don't shy away from expressing my opinion on a subject, and that may irk a few people now and again.  That's OK by me, as long as we're civil in how we discuss our differing views.  I'm open to learning something from another's viewpoint, although I don't count on ever swaying another in my direction and vice versa.  Communication is a must, regardless.. or nothing ever gets accomplished - that's just a truth in all things.  So I communicate, often, for better or worse.  Hopefully more better than worse.

The *Take A Knee movement has gained momentum and perhaps even gained a new purpose thanks to 45's  juvenile tweets on the subject.  He bellowed "I'd Fire those Sons-of-Bitches".... These words spoken to a crowd regarding NFL players  who have taken a knee while the Anthem is played and the flag displayed.   That obnoxious speech and the accompanying tweets led all NFL teams to kneel and stand with arms locked together on Sunday, a show of Unity in the league after being attacked by their, our, yours my.. President.

  *Sigh.

How do I feel about the *knee movement?   My opinion differs greatly from most of my Democrat or Liberal friends and they have let me know this very vehemently on social media. My republican friends are cheering me on, happy to finally! be in agreement on something.

Jeez... it's not about that, folks.

No kidding - because of my opinion on this particular thing, I was accused of being a traitor to my "party" because I don't  agree on this issue ... and what that right there is to me is the colossal failure of all parties, especially in recent times.  We tend to separate ourselves into the party our beliefs align with, and we shut out and vilify all others.  We close our eyes and ears to listening to another avenue, another way, another take and then when we do that, we are blind to our own failures or pitfalls or oversights.   That's what our government is doing, anyway.

I have never fully committed to a party affiliation myself, as I want to hear all sides on the issues according to the various crisis we currently face ( where do we start??)  and I don't want an affiliation to own me.    I see strong and valid ideas on both sides of the isle, amid the corruption and usual bullshittery. When I vote, I vote for the person I feel will have the most positive impact in the current political and social environment for the greater good.  Admittedly, that's been more Democrat than not.  Mostly.  Almost All.  Last summer and fall  I did lend an earnest ear to what the Republicans had to say - and the lead horse in the end was just not one I could ever stand behind and feel good about.   We've all witnessed why that is by now.   If you voted for 45 and still feel good about it, well you're amazing.  I congratulate you on your stoic resolve to see it through.  I hope you know something special that I don't, really not kidding here, I mean this.

Racism is an ugly, ugly thing -  most of us know this.  What will turn the hearts and minds of those who are so ingrained with that hatred is beyond me, for it should be crystal clear in this day and age how very wrong the act.  While I sympathize with those in our culture who still deal with racism, injustice and inequality, and it is not just the black population, there are many forms of racism and injustice, prejudice and inequality - I wish Colin and his comrades in arms (or knees) chose something other than the symbol that for many represents our patriotism, our love for our country, the symbol and song that brings goosebumps and tears to my eyes every time I hear and see it in a public display - The symbol that for me and many others represents - Home of the Free Because of the Brave.  Because of those men and women, many of whom lost their one sacred life defending our freedoms (indeed, including freedom of speech)   and were buried with a flag draped over their coffin.  I am of the opinion that  it was a really poor choice to carry the racism message.  Others are thrilled because it's a peaceful protest.. and the issue is huge, real, and needs to be addressed.   I  see their point.  ..... and I still stand behind my opinion that  they should have picked another way. This way will be taken as unpatriotic, ungrateful, by those who won't sympathize with them anyway.  Why give them grounds to do so?

So what will happen now?  When will the kneeling stop and some positive action begin?  Well we are all talking about it... but most of "we" aren't the problem.   In their spare time and with the multiple spare funds they have gained as very successful athletes in this country..  I hope those men will head out into the communities that need them, will meet with the press and talk out the issues, will meet with law enforcement and inner city families, build some bridges, community centers, promote work ethic and education,  keep the conversations going so that something will actually come of this taking of the knee, shunning the flag and the anthem.

Since I posted that opinion, I have been called a traitor, I have been accused of not fully understanding or sympathizing with the black man's experience because I am of white privilege.  I have been told I have gone to the other side because I side with 45.

I was frustrated that some of the folks I still consider friends were so aggravated by my opinion on this knee taking stance. I saw their point, why couldn't they see mine?  We both want the same things in the end.   And then I said that thing I often need to say to myself, .... maybe it took six times but still.... This isn't about you, Karen.

True, this - we don't need to defend ourselves and shouldn't take offense to other points of view. That's not an easy pill to swallow for someone like me.  Nevertheless...    I know who I am, what I stand for and what I do not, I trust my own intelligence, I am fair and honest.  I believe in  equality and justice for all.   If you and I meet up in a dark place and you desperately need the last of something I've got, I'll share it with you or hand it over whether you're black, white, orange or red, voted for Hill or Tr*mp or RumpleStilskin.   That's going to have to be good enough for anyone who wants to stick around.

Well... now that the heavy is dumped... let me share a little light with you.   Last night the light on the cove was nothing short of magical - water smooth as glass with little breeze, mellow gorgeous silvery blue and then golden pink light as far as the eye could see.  I wish I could pour it out to all of you so that you could feel the joy and peace I felt last night as I paddled through that quiet water.  It took the edge off my day.

That and a gin and tonic with a lovely twist of lime made by my sympathetic mother.

Till soon, friends -

  1. That picture of the sailboat w/the sun behind it is magical!

I see your point about the choice—and why does it have to be this symbol—but I honestly have no problem with it. As so many others say, it’s not about the flag. I am so encouraged when I see people standing up/kneeling for change, that I just have to applaud it. And when people say why didn’t Colin K. do this or that, I say, well, actually he did. He’s donated to a number of causes, including veterans’ groups, and continues to do so. I don’t pretend to know what the answer is; I just know what is happening now is so unbelievably wrong. Holy sweet Jesus, the election of Moore in Alabama? Unbelievable. Trump re-tweeting cartoons of himself hitting Hillary in the back? Dear god. Anyone still supporting this man is as disgraceful as he is. No excuses.

    1. Elle - yes, to all of it. And yet, I wish he had picked a symbol that doesn't stand for all that is RIGHT here, all that HAS been accomplished by great and selfless people.

And Holy Hell - Moore??... what kind of person would vote him into any position of power again, with his known record, with his brand of hate. Wow.

As for Tr*mp and his idiotic juvenile tweets - I'm finding among those I know personally... those who still love him are amused by that behavior. It says a lot about them, I think. Enough said on that.

  2. Those photos are out of this world gorgeous! WOW!

I'm not particularly happy about a lot that's going on, (including 45) but my premise is we need to "live and let live"; do what we can for our fellow man along with my faith.

You are so much more educated than I am especially about world affairs, and as always I applaud you for voicing how you feel.

    1. I am not much more educated than you. You have lived long, and hard, and have seen much... you have formed educated opinions based on your experience and you are a kind and giving soul. Amen.

  3. I will never understand why people can't let other people have their own opinions, no matter what religion, race or party we favor. God has given us the free will to think on our own and I think that is what we are called to do.

Maybe because I work at the VA and see what war has done to so many of our vets I can't imagine NOT standing to honor those brave souls that give their all for us. I feel the same way about our policemen and firemen...and all of those that give their service to mankind.

Thank YOU for standing up for what YOU believe in--irregardless of party lines and other opinions. You are a good soul, Karen! xo Diana

  5. The Star Spangled Banner does not belong to the military. It doesn't belong to the first responders. It's for every single American. There is a marked similarity between the Nazi's in salute and our standing with hands over our hearts. The difference is one people are free, the other under subjugation. That freedom gives as the ability to sit, to kneel, to keep our hands at our sides. The Nazis' gave no such freedoms. As to racism, have you ever thought what it must be like to have people hate you from the moment you were born? Because of your skin color. There is no other place to be born but the earth. We all belong here and we deserve to be treated with the care we lavish on homeless animals. Trump is using nationalism to divert attention. Watch out for those false gods! D

  6. I do not claim the symbols belong to any one entity - I do not deny that it is for every single American. There is no comparison to how I and many feel about the symbol and what the Nazi's stood for. I have not said they do not have the right to do as they please - any of us is "they". I said I feel it is a poor choice for the reasons I stated. Just because I do not suffer in the same ways does not mean I do not have empathy, sympathy and compassion for the issue of racism. I absolutely agree with you that we all belong here and deserve to be treated with the care we lavish on homeless animals. That.. was a direct dig to me, and I believe unfair. Tr*mp is Tr*mp... I do not idolize any false gods just because I have a strong belief in what that flag and anthem represent to many. So you see - we agree on all the issues - we don't agree on the delivery of the message. Funny thing - two sides of a coin.

  7. I totally agree with your opinion and I do wish that others that disagree with me would be willing to listen to both sides too. I, like you wish he had chosen a different vehicle for his protest and as all of them are immensely wealthy compared to most that they are protesting for, I wish they would do what you have suggested, actually put their name and fame behind helping those they are protesting for, not just giving money to a group but actually making the connections between people. There was a NFL player that did stand over the weekend who was a former soldier and then apologized for doing it the next day, did this group come down on him for HIS beliefs at that moment, that he had been where men and women have lost their lives protecting our freedoms? I vote for the person I believe will do the best at the position they are running for, not because of party affiliation. I am sorry for all of us when our friends cannot be broad minded enough to try and look at our position and instead are derisive in their comments or conversations. I have to remember that line " it is not about Me ". BEAUTIFUL pictures and what a wonderful blessing of getting to enjoy this often! take care from Iowa

    1. Amen, Melody. Thank you. I was so sad for the NFL Veteran when today I read he "apologized". I didn't think he was putting his team down by doing so... I thought he was paying respect to the flag and his fallen comrades and the liberties we all have because of men like him. That he felt he had to apologize for doing so is sad. And I will ask again, so where will this end, this movement, and how is it bringing us closer together. ANYWAY... thank you for joining the conversation.

  8. I am sorry that you thought it was a dig at you. I first used the word respect but realized that was something one cannot expect another to feel. A better choice would have been wounded. Trump would be the false god, and was a general statement not an accusation. My comments are my thoughts not a schooling of you.D

    1. D - I appreciate your willingness to join the conversation. We are much more alike than not. I don't disagree with you on most of this and I'm really and truly attempting to improve understanding among like-minded people when I chirp on this blog. I am so thoroughly horrified by the current POTUS it bubbles over. Trying to reign it in, how'm I doing so far... lol...

  9. I've been watching the Ken Burns show on Vietnam. Last night was too much for me. I couldn't watch Nixon. I was jailed for 3 days during the May Day protests. I've heard a president lie and service men/women die. Trump is very close. ✌️D

    1. Thank you for your understanding regardless of our opinions on this. I think we see it very much the same way, other than I really just wish they chose another symbol. That simple. Now people are burning their stupid NFL jerseys and boycotting games because they see this thing as unpatriotic and ungrateful. That's what I mean by message lost.

  11. Try and find (maybe you've already seen it) a video of Barack Obama at a town hall answering the question "How do you feel about NFL players refusing to stand..." (I tried to add the link to Resonant Muse but I am a failure at such things...) What a beautiful, nuanced response.

  12. The cove looks amazing. So peaceful, something we need in this day and age.

I can really see both sides of the kneeling issue, I've certainly heard both sides. What really burns my toast is the person disparaging ANYONE for not respecting the flag. His freakin' wife had to nudge him to get him to place his hand over his heart.....more than once! He avoided the draft. It's just more hypocrisy and more of the "Look at me!!" shit.

Racism is a tough subject, but for me what I hate the most is how far backwards we've gone. There are cold, hard facts that support the black viewpoint. And frankly, they've tried many other things to get attention turned to the subject...I imagine they feel taking a knee at least gets that attention.

Did you see that post on facebook (I'm paraphrasing here) where a mother asks her little girl why her team takes a knee during a game. "Because someone is hurt and we're waiting for them to get help and stop hurting." Kind of like those NFL players....taking a knee because their brothers and sisters are hurting and they want their pain to stop.

    You know?

I get the other side too, the patriotic side because God knows we all better hang on to the symbol of our democracy because our actual democracy is goin' down in flames.

Yep, I could use a cove.

  13. I remember my reaction to the flag-burning back in the 1960's, so I can see your point. Still, I think that the NFL in this case is on the side of the things the National Anthem stands for--freedom, equality, and yes, respect for the rights of others. Drumpf is on the side of oppression, discrimination, and the subversion of our democracy. He can spew "patriotic" platitudes all he wants, but his real loyalty is only to himself and his corporate cronies. And really, a serial draft-dodger who sneered at a Vietnam vet for being captured, and took cheap shots at a Gold Star family? He has no right to talk about patriotism.
And what really gets me is the fact that while he was doing all this bellyaching about the NFL, he was ignoring the REAL crisis in our Caribbean territories. (He still seems to think they're not really worth helping.) I think Drumpf is a disgrace to his position and to his country, and somebody should kick the SOB out. I'd take Colin's tactics any day over Donald's!

    1. Agree 100 percent, Marty. I don't think Colin K is protesting something he shouldn't... I think if he had chosen another symbol the message could not have been misconstrued. I am still offended for the families of our fallen soldiers, etc. etc. But on all else, we absolutely agree.

  14. I'm all over the place on this issue. On one hand I don't necessarily see it as disrespecting the flag or our country, on the other hand I certainly see how people see it that way. But silently kneeling without uttering any offensive words, facial expressions or gestures, etc.? I'm not sure that I interpret that as disrespecting our country or our flag. I don't like that they choose to protest this way but that's just my personal feeling. Would we feel the same if we were FORCED to stand? If they were BURNING the flag or some other form of aggressive action towards our flag/country? That would be, to me, disrespecting the flag and our country. But I don't see their protest as their hatred of this country and what we stand for. I will personally stand for our flag and the anthem and it brings me to tears each time, I stand because I'm proud to be just a tiny little piece of this country. I always come back to the same thought - I'd rather live in a country where you are allowed to protest by "taking a knee" than to live in a country where you are NOT allowed. They are free kneel but we are just as free to stand.

    1. Agree, Anita. I don't think they should be banned - my stance isn't that kind. I think they should have picked another symbol for the reasons stated above. Thanks for joining the conversation, I, too, am all over the place with it.
