Great news - day 2 and not a chick has been lost. I've named them... Arya, Sansa, Summer, Snow, Khaleesi and Cersei (there's one in every flock) - They're perky and chirpy and hungry and pooping an awful lot. Occasionally they flutter/fly/sprint across the Christmas Tree Box they currently call home - all good signs for healthy chicks.
Cersei in my hands here is the loudest, with a wicked chirp and bossy attitude already. I hope she isn't a he.
Pardon my allergy eyes - the past few weeks have been the worst my allergies have ever been, and the meds make me feel worse, so I'm winging it without. Bleh. Makes me look ancient and feel ancient. Any allergy sufferers out there have tips on what helps? I'm allergic to grass, pollen, mold, dust - and I live on a horse farm with hay fields in an old house with beams that are dusty - hahahahahaha.... it's funny if it weren't so.. itchy.
Today the sun is bright but the air still chilled...
It's the kind of day where the dogs go out but come back in quickly enough because WIND! After a quick squirrel hunt they much prefer their sun spots in the family room.
I let the grown-up girls free roam for most of today, and just brought them back to the coop before the hawks start circling the fields again. They love to eat all the seed the birds and squirrels drop from the feeder...
When it's time to bring them in, all I need to do is shake a can of cheerios or corn.. with my high annoying Here Chick Chicks voice - , ... and they come running.
If you've pondered having chickens in your backyard or farm, I haven't yet met a person who dared to take it on and then regretted it. They are truly delightful to have around, and the work is minimal compared to other farm animals. There is the responsibility, of course, and you need to know how to properly care for them - many books on the subject - but it's relatively easy and you don't need a lot of space as long as they have the right living quarters and you feed and clean properly. The fresh eggs are divine.
Are you a reader? My mother gave me a great book for my birthday - a true story about a remarkable young woman, her memoir- a link to a review of it HERE. You won't want to put it down until you're through it.
Till soon, friends -

Excellent choice of names
ReplyDeleteI read that book, it was AMAZING!!!! I used to have chickens, and I do miss them, but Sweetie has a deal with a local lady now that he gets a dozen eggs a week from her for $5 and gives them to me, so I'm ok with that!! They are so cute though! As for allergies, I'm like you - allergic to everything it seems - dust, dogs, ashes, mice, trees, weeds, and heaven knows what else. I've been suffering lately too, but I hate taking meds every day so I suffer through it. Saline rinse for my nose is helpful...rewetting drops in my eyes help me not scratch my contacts out....it is what it is.
ReplyDeleteYour chicks are so cute and I love the names....
ReplyDeleteLet's hope those Game of Thrones names don't come back to haunt the chicks!
ReplyDeleteI always loved the chicks we got every spring...some for laying...some for food. It was my job to collect eggs from the hens (not a nice job sometimes when some old sitting biddy took a dislike to being disturbed)....lol
ReplyDeleteI just jotted down that book-it sounds fantastic. Thanks for the little promo of it. xo Diana
Hello, love the cute chicks and the names. I do not blame the dogs, the cold wind feel like it goes right thru me. I have the same allergies and I already have problems with dry eyes. I use eye drops all the time. I am going to add that book on my TBR list. Have a happy day!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad the chicks are doing well. And how I love the photo of the sun streaming in, dogs chilling out!
ReplyDeleteYou're right about "Educated." It's gripping. What a story -- and to think it is real.
I am an allergy sufferer. Of all the OTC meds, Allegra works the best for me and I take it every single day of my life. I also take Singulair at night because I was told it tackles allergies in another way and helps with asthma. When I need, I use Nasacort. I keep the windows closed for the most part because we live on a dirt road. I keep the vent closed in the truck. We keep the heat/ac filter changed often. It's not fun but it keeps the allergies under control for the most part. I know there are worse things but it's kind of exhausting. Good Luck with the chicks and fingers crossed you don't have a rooster in the bunch.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted chickens, but we live in an old beach community so the lots are tight and town regulation is even tighter. Plus, we have hawks and recently a family of bald eagles has settled in, and while they're lovely, they're always hungry! ;) I'm sorry to hear about your allergies. I suffer as well. It's just been getting worse as I get older. I hate meds, too. I've tried them all and Zyrtec works best for me. I use saline in my eyes, keep the windows closed and keep the a/c on and alway have the windows closed and recirculating button on in the car. Oh...and I shower at night so the pollen from my hair doesn't get into the sheets...it's all a lot of fun!! ;) I hope you feel better.
