10 degrees

Ten.

Degrees.

And tonight it's supposed to reach ZERO.

Believe it or not, it doesn't feel so bad,
until the wind begins to blow that icy snow dust
up in your bared neck parts
where you forgot to wrap a scarf.

The men were up at 5:30 am to plow the six or so inches that fell overnight..

and the girlchild and I trudged up to the barn around 7am
to feed chickens,  horses, clean stalls, break up the ice in the water buckets
and gripe about the icy snow dust blowing up in our bared neck parts.
Am I painting a clear picture for you here?

I was happy to see the menfolk had cleared a path to the coop for me..
not a lot of things worse than  that  icy snow dust getting down inside your boots
as you're just getting into your morning chores.

I gave the girls some oatmeal in warm milk
(they're spoiled, don't I know it)

Then we tackled the barn chores...

Opie and Max had a good romp in the snow
while we mucked stalls...

Both are double blanketed today.

The sun slowly burned through the  heavy, grey winter sky and
we've currently got a balmy 16 degrees.

Have I told you lately how much I appreciate my barn help?
I don't ask for her assistance often because she's got two jobs
and a horse living elsewhere at this particular place in time.
On mornings like this, though, maybe I beg just a little.

I've been trying some paleo recipes, and for those of you who are interested,
the two I've linked below are really really good.   They got a thumbs up
from both the husband and kids and it's so much better for you.
I already feel lighter in my loafers,  I kid you not.
Getting sugar and bread/pasta/wheat products
out of your system lightens your body's load
and the proof is in how you feel if you try it.

I'm not stupid enough to believe myself when I say I'll never eat junk again..
but there are healthy junk choices out there.. like these cookies below...
My son, the picky eater and chocolate chip connoisseur, ate almost
the whole first batch I made in one milk dunking session.  They're that good.

  1. Wow, that's some serious cold and snow! We're mild here, lots of fog, but today there are patches of blue sky! Hope you manage alright and everyone keeps warm.
That chicken recipe sounds pretty good, but I'm not sure I can live without pasta or bread...OMGosh! You really feel lighter already? Might be worth a try. My weight loss has been excruciatingly slow, but I don't really work all that hard at it. I don't get enough exercise either...if I didn't sit all day at my job, that would help. But, I am slowly but surely keeping at it. I've got a long ways to go.

  2. Karen, this is not the paleo CCC recipe I gave you. However, similar ingredients. They are a hit here too, even my husband loves them! I really like the paleo way of eating. It works for me. Stay warm!!

  4. 12F here in east Tennessee with a bit of that white yuck; don't like snow, yet the puppers seem to enjoy it for two minutes every 5 minutes; I'm exhausted opening/closing the door. The roaring wind last night was vicious. Lovely pictures of beautiful horses. I so like your blog.

  7. It's so nice to see all of you working together for the common goal. Girl Child looks so pretty!

I feel like a weenie; it was 34 here this morning with a high of 48. Thought my ta ta's were going to freeze when I had to go to the store.

Stay as warm and safe as you can.

  8. We are having the bitter cold, but just not that much snow. We have 23 new calves here at the farm, so the weather couldn't come at a worse time. Nice to see how well your animals are taken care of!

  9. Your horses in their blanket coats are beautiful!

It suppose to be -12 Sunday with snow coming in Saturday and Sunday. So much for global warming!

Stay warm and hope the electricity stays on!

  10. Oh- I am so tired of the cold and snow already. We have it, too, and our schools have already been closed for this coming Monday with minus 40 to minus 50 predicted (with wind chill factored in).

You are so right about the sugar and wheat. I need to get them both out of my diet again- xo Diana

  11. I am trying to ditch the wheat so I tried some coconut flour snickerdoodles - they were pretty good, but tasted like macaroons with cinnamon. I haven't baked with almond flour, but will give it a try. I am trying to go light on other grains too, but have to have occasional jasmine rice with my curry or my gluten free cornbread- just trying to not eat those things as often. Wheatfreesisters.squarespot have a gluten free flour mix recipe that I am going to try. Their recipes sound wonderful!

  12. That site is www.wheatfreesisters.squarespace.com I think I must be getting tired! Anyway check out their baking mix where you dump in bags of brown rice flour, white rice, flour, sweet rice flour and tapioca flour. I have found everything but the sweet rice flour!
