One of these days, Alice....

BOOM!.. Right to the moon!!!

*sigh*

Sometimes, especially when I think I'm coping rather well with my loss of hearing... the reality of it creeps in on me again and I could get pretty depressed about it if I let those feelings settle.

Yesterday I got a lot accomplished around here.  I was particularly happy with the paleo soup and banana bread I had just finished making for last night's supper.  One pan was pretty sticky and I decided to leave the hot water running over it for a -few minutes- to help me get the pan clean.

Hearing impaired people lose the ability to hear most running water unless you happen to be standing next to Niagara falls.

So .. back to the running water.  I ran upstairs to do some laundry... came back downstairs to fold done laundry.. checked e-mail, wrote a blog post... then remembered I needed to turn that hot water off and clean the pan.  As I walked back into the kitchen I stepped in a puddle.  The puddle covered half the kitchen floor.   A measuring cup I had used to cook... covered the drain hole and the sink flooded.. and then spilled over... and over... and over.   Even the basement needed mopping.  Many many soaked towels, carpets and curses later.. the mess is cleaned up.  HOWEVER... our hardwood floors are buckling.

If I had been a person with normal hearing, I would have heard the water hit the floor the second it did so.

To my husband's credit and much to my surprise, when he arrived home last night he did not blow a fit, visualize Ralph Kramden right here.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a mess of towels to sort out, some wet carpet to move around, and an appointment at the Jeep Dealership to see if they can get the dead mouse out of the engine, because the stench is hideous.

It's a wonderful life, though, isn't it?   It's a new day, all.   Never ever leave a running sink unattended, OK?
Ok.

  2. Oh no! I know you were sick when you saw it. I hope everything works out. I have a lot of things going wrong right now, too. Doesn't it seem everything happens at once? Sending you lots of hugs, Diane

  4. Years ago, I was on the phone with my mother telling her the good news of my first book contract. I was using an amplifier and working very hard to listen, but was so happy. When I hung up, I remembered the teapot on the cooktop. I managed to burn an Alessi pot. That whistling bird must have been some loud before it melted. Scary to think that I could have burned the house down. So, I went from happy to crushed. Thanks to my CIs, I now hear whistles, and beeps and running water. Cis are still an option for you :)

  5. Dang it, darn it and poop! That's the sort of thing that leaves you frustrated enough to chew your own toes off, lol

But in all seriousness, I hope all outcomes well with your floors. And your 'mouse'. And life in general...

Don't be too hard on yourself/hearing - things odd and vexing can and do happen even with the best of 'ears'...

Take for example, the time that (because I have a habit of pushing my kitch faucet to and fro left to right WITH VIGOR so many times over the years) it broke/popped OFF between the handles! When I wasn't watching! Sent water everywhere. UP (soaked ceiling). Out and left and right. Over the sink itself to the floor. Took me a bit to notice even with my hearing. What a mess, so I do know).

And thank our luck, karma, stars (or our good taste in men lol) for husbands who do not go freako when such things occur roflmao

*tho I confess to you that more than once mine DID day "if you keep pushing that faucet back and forth so hard it's going to break off one day"! I laughed and replied "yeah, like THAT's gonna happen?!"* have yet to live it down, lol

    Hang in there

  6. Oh Karen I am so sorry. If it were me I would have sat in the puddle and cried...
AS a dear friend keeps reminding me we are in Retrograde and that is why my week and hers has been hell also and it's only Tuesday!

My ex repeatedly pushed a box under the bathroom counter each day so hard that it disengaged a connector in the U and one day I am in the kitchen downstairs when a river of water starts streaming down through the vent in the ceiling. I am screaming at him to turn off the water he's running as I am dashing to garage for towels and when I get back in I hear he has stepped into the shower and still cannot hear me...another gallon or two....sigh
Luckily we had linoleum at the time.

It happens to all of us.....

I had a friend start her car and almost engage the shift when her husband screamed that their baby was in the carrier on the roof where she had set her to retrieve her keys! After my first child, I lived in constant fear I would do something similar.

When you get home, hopefully sans rodent, give yourself a break. It happens to all of us.

  7. Sounds like your week is of to a yucky start. While I am not hearing impaired, I can't imagine because I go crazy if my ears are stopped up and I have trouble hearing. I am however very forgetful and the same thing would have happened at our house. In fact, when we remodeled a couple of years ago my husband and I debated back and forth about the hardwoods that we put all through the house and decided that the laundry room, bathrooms (of course) and kitchen would be tile. I am very thankful for the decision and even bought enough extra tile to put in entry hall if it got too bad.
At least the mouse problem is hopefully easier and cheaper to fix.
I know an old lady who lived in rural Texas and her favorite say was "if it's not the hogs, it's the windmill". I can only imagine her life experiences!
    Hang in there!

  8. Oh Karen... I'm so sorry this all happened. Yup, we've all done things like this...but that doesn't stop us from kicking ourselves for doing it.
Clean it all up, get rid of the dead rodent and carry on even if it's one soggy step at a time :)

  9. After a freakish lightning bolt hit the garage near where my husband and his Dad were standing three summers ago- my father-in-law finally went for the newest hearing aids. He had complete loss in the one ear that faced the bolt… and he is adjusting to the aids rather nicely. I know you've explored all the possibilities- I am just saying I feel for you after seeing my FIL struggle for several years now.

Hugs sweet friend… I appreciate how real you are with us always :)

  11. So sorry that happened. But, you know, it is how you deal with it that makes all of the difference.

  12. Oh that sinking feeling (no pun intended) when you discovered the over flow. Check with your home owners insurance...perhaps you might have some coverage. Good luck and (((hugs))) glad "Ralph" was so understanding!!

  13. Oh Karen, it's just not fair is it? I am so sorry that happened. Me? I can see pretty well, but dang if I don't walk into walls all the time.
I remember someone telling me once, "ya know the walls aren't gonna move for you".

  15. Oh, that's terrible! My co-blogger, Stick Horse Cowgirl C has had to move out of her house due to flooding from frozen pipes! It will be weeks before all the work is done and she can move back in! She had left water dripping, but the plumber said if you are on a well, the water has to be running! So we are making sure ours is running because it is bitter cold here! We aren't used to it down here and I am so anxious for a warm spell!

  16. Oh, Karen! You and I both had messes in the kitchen. I am so so sorry.

And as for dead mouse smell? You aren't kidding. I remember having one in an old house where we lived. It was a month before the stench stopped. Must have been in the wall or something.

  17. Oh, no!!!! My husband is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids. He still can't hear some things with those in.

  18. Oh well, shit happens!! :) I've been known to do some crazy stunts and I can't even blame hearing loss. Sure makes life interesting though, doesn't it? Sorry about the mouse. Eeuw...

  19. I get it. There is a certain isolation to hearing loss. We live in our own world. Sometimes I welcome it. Other times, it sucks. You had the 'sucks' part. I hope your hardwood straightens out.

  20. Karen, boo! I hate this for you. I admire your 'it's a new day' and believe it is a solid reminder for all of us - mercies new every morning.

Friend, do you think some of the options you looked at it the past will surface again? Or let things be as they will for now?

Ah, just wish I could be there to help mop up laundry, wash those wet towels and hang up your rug to dry. So sorry. :(
