Life Boats

Yesterday started out kinda lousy- just about every part of my body hurt from this damned fibromyalgia nonsense.  I was also concerned for my daughter, who was away for a few days with her boyfriend and family and would soon return to a cat sicker than just a few days before, her much loved Phoebe.. a cat she had adopted from a shelter several years earlier.  in the past month she had developed an aggressive mouth cancer.  Surgery would mean removing her lower jaw and then chemo and radiation.  Prognosis, 6 months.  K made the wise decision not to torture the cat with all that nonsense, but that meant soon, a time would come to end her misery.

The husband suggested we go down to the cottage after farm chores were done - to cut the grass and chill out for a while.  We did just that.  The humidity had disappeared and the temps were in the high 70's, lovely breezes.  As soon as I saw the water, I decided to get in it.  Donned that bathing suit again!.. ( so proud of my new resolve to live every day fully and without apologies for my less than perfect self. That is SO silly and a waste of time - if you're doing it too, stop.  Be. Do. LIVE).

The water was so refreshing, my muscles eased as my body relaxed into the salt water.. and I floated.  Stared up at the sky and said.. whatever will be, will be. Let go or be dragged - so I let go.

We sat on the platform as the water lapped at our feet (high tide) and the neighbor asked if we'd like to hop on his little boat and head out to tour the Thimbles.... and So We Did.   What a treat!  With the wind in our hair and the salt spray on our face, we cruised out and then slowly motored through the thread of islands - a fascinating place with so many houses, all different styles, and beautiful rock outcroppings - a few bridges spanning one island to the next too...  These pics below are not mine - taken from the internet as I had no camera onboard...

It was the shot in the arm I needed - a life boat for the day.  We came home refreshed.

Today, I accompanied my daughter to the veterinary hospital with her beloved cat. She made a very humane and selfless decision to end the cat's suffering, even though she would miss her terribly and hated to let her go.   The veterinarian and her staff were so caring, so compassionate.  Another life boat. Miss Phoebe is now resting eternally among the pines on the side of this old house,  with no more pain.   My daughter is hurting, but grateful for the ability to release Phoebe from that awful disease.

Rest easy, Phoebe girl.  In your last years you knew love.
Spoiled, pampered, Love.  That - is a beautiful thing.

  1. I am so sorry about Phoebe. I hope your daughter's heart continues to mend with each day. A very sad loss, but the right thing if the sweet kitty was suffering.

Sounds like it was a beautiful day visiting Stella. I have never heard of the Thimble Islands...wow!!! Amazing homes and got a better idea looking at the map. Do the residents have to pack up in the winter?

I wish you all the best with your fibromyalgia. Don't know much about it although I've tried to get an idea online as I know another blog friend who has it. I hope floating or swimming in the water helps...you have that on your side!

    1. I'm not sure about winter residents on the Thimbles - some of the houses certainly look like they are year rounders, but not sure. I would imagine getting in a boat to do every single thing would get annoying... lol..

  2. So sorry to hear about Phoebe's passing. It is hard to let a pet/family member go, even when it is the best decision.

  3. So sorry for your daughter's loss (and yours). I just went through that a few weeks ago, it's so hard to let them go but you can't let them suffer either. A vet once told me that the gift of rest is your last expression of love for them. I hope time will ease her grief.

I've heard fibromyalgia is very hard to live with. It's great you had the chance for some fun in the sun and water!

    1. Thanks, Marty - and the fibro is no picnic, but it could always be worse, and that's what I am trying to focus on I guess :-)

  4. I'm so sorry you're suffering, Karen. As well, I'm sorry for Kristen losing Phoebe. It really was the kind thing to do even though I know she's hurting.

Thank goodness for Stella! Glad you had a good day on the water. Looks like paradise all around you. :)

  5. I hear you on the Fibro Front...the story of my life too. I am so sorry to hear about Phoebe...it is one of the most difficult things to do...even though it is necessary. So glad you were able to find some peace by visiting Stella! I love the island photos...great houses! One of my most favorite things to do on the boat is house hunt! Hope you are feeling better!

  6. Karen...
My heart goes out to you, your daughter and your family in the loss of Phoebe. We never want to lose our beloved pets and yet the time comes when we know that the ultimate act of loving them is to let them go. I am so sorry.

I love the way your Sunday turned out.. how you opened yourself to the day and just let it 'wash' over you. I think you should paint a sign with those powerful words... Be. Do. Live. :)

  7. So sorry for your daughter. Four years ago today I had to let my beloved dog Clancy go. The hardest thing I ever did.

  8. Awww--I have tear-filled eyes....my little Mistycat had a cancerous tumor at the base of her throat/jaw. I let her go early on as she was already having such a hard time eating and then I could tell she was in pain. Took her in thinking she had an infection or something and I would get a pill and she would get well. Xrays, etc., a few weeks progressively more painful. Vet said I could take her home but the kind thing would be to let her go that day so that I would suffer instead of her...and I did. So, I know exactly what your daughter is feeling.

I am glad you LIVED IN THE MOMENT when you were at the cottage. Some days we just need to do that...and some days it is harder to do than other days.

I hope you have a peaceful, wonderful night- xo Diana

  9. I tried to post a couple of times but got too teary. We had to let go of one of our young Siamese cats last fall. I was so proud of my son, who held him in his arms as the vet administered the medication. The dear vet came to our house and I gave him the option of going in another room but he insisted on holding Teddy.

Driving by you neck of the woods on the way to Gloucester next week.

  10. Oh, so sorry about Phoebe and your daughter's pain. It's so hard, but we know it's the right thing. Release from suffering is always good. She was a beautiful cat.

What a treat to go for a boat ride! It just amazes me how vastly different your coastline is from ours. Yours is much more user-friendly with all those inlets and little islands. Very cool! I hope to visit the East coast someday...

Isn't it funny how water both soothes our minds, and our bodies? The best thing.

  11. And now Scaramucci is out. You are right: you seriously cannot make this stuff up. What a laughingstock our government has become.
