Dear 2020

First ... let me complain about the absolutely Godless bone chilling cold that has temporarily descended upon us here in New England.  It's not like we have never experienced it.. but this came on REAL quick.. I mean a drop of 40 degrees in hours, and the wind.. the WIND.  I say it's temporary because in two days, if they're correct in the forecasting, it will be up in the 40's again, as opposed to the 2 degrees we have today - with a wind chill of -15.

Below:  6 a.m., looking up to the horse barn, where you can see a tiny patch of light in the feed room.  The full moon was radiant! Phone pics don't do this justice.  When I stepped outside to feed horses and chickens, my breath froze on my face mask immediately.  Ugh.

Frost on the window panes...

Speaking of freezing - This government shut down is something, huh? My friend's son is a Coastie, and the outpouring of support for these guys and girls who are protecting us on the waters and not being paid for it is reaffirming.  There are so many good folks out there! We need to see more of them.

**If you're a Trump fan and you still believe in and support him, feel free to exit now.  I used to care that I might offend people with my opinions... in this case, and in this space which is my own, given what he's done to us as a people, and the ignorance of ignoring the harm, the real damage, I don't.

I look forward to and hope for and pray for the day ( and I hope we all live to see it) when the old regime is cast from our government and new, brave, honest faces in the Republican and Democratic parties come forward and heal this thoroughly tainted and corrupt, hate fueled divide.  We need a governing body that will repair our integrity, our humanity, our leadership status in this one world we all share.  A Government that can work together for the common good once and for all, to fix our broken realities.  It's absolutely possible!  But the current cast of characters  have become so bought and embittered of each other and bold with the multitude of deceits.. they are failing us all miserably.

Some of my Tr*mp supporting friends are now saying if they knew then what they know now, they'd never have voted for him - One said to me today - "I had no idea he would be so totally unhinged, and so reckless with his speech and tweets.  So callous with truth. I'm mortified. I wanted change, but I didn't  want us to collectively sell our souls in the process.  Right now it feels like that to me."

That... was a breath of fresh air for me.

Dear 2020....    Send us a leader who can heal the divide, reach across party lines and bring us back together as a people, as a government.   Send us a leader who gives hope, inspires, encourages, lifts us. ..all.

Is it too late?  Are we past the point of redemption?  All this tribalism, this Us Against Them, the continued racism and prejudice... has been brewing for a very long time -  it's not new, but it's emboldened, when we, or at least I,  thought we were actually becoming more    civil, more tolerant, more enlightened, more gentile as a nation.  These past two years have been a real eye opener, I was indeed naive.     Tr*mp has  given these malignancies in our society permission,  free reign,  but he didn't create them.  They were right there under the surface all along, waiting for the spark to ignite them, breathe new life into old prejudices.

Dearest 2020 - send us those miracle workers, please.

  1. I'm pulling for Amy Klobuchar , Senator from Minnesota. She is solid, sane and can work across the aisle. Keep an eye out for her on TV.

  3. The hate was there before, but not in power. I went to a rodeo a few years ago in Steve King's district. The emcee gave a constant stream of "jokes" at the expense of women, blacks, Latinos, Mexicans in particular and President Obama above all. The crowd went nuts, especially at the blatantly racist Obama jokes. The thing is, these people weren't really against anything Obama was doing. They were against the idea that some unworthy people (blacks, Latinos) would somehow "jump the line" and get ahead of them. They believed the lies about Obama being Muslim. They felt sure that they were going to get rich one day and when that day came they didn't want to pay taxes. They believe the lie that government is the problem not the solution. They don't want inspectors telling them not to pump their cows full of antibiotics and hormones or to fine them for dumping chemicals into rivers. And so they elected a godless, lawless, principles-free perpetual adolescent who won't tell them what to do and who lets them vent their hate.

  4. Dear Anonymous - thank you for your comment. How very tragic, all of it. And there are so many people like that out there - which is something I didn't believe until now.

  5. Beautifully said, Karen! I agree with *EVERY* word, from the bitter cold (it wss single digits with the windchill in NC yesterday morning, and never made it past freezing, and, as I currently type this @ 5:40, it's in the teens ... and that doesn't include the windchill. Brrrr!!!

The current state of affairs in our country is beyond dismal, and your words rang were spot-on. I, like you, thought that racism and bigotry and hatred for anyone deemed as "different" (i.e., race, religion, origin of birth, etc) had taken a back seat under the eight years of Obama's leadership, but I now realize that there were those who strongly resented a "black man" as President, and Trump gave them a platform for expressing their hatred;in fact,he's embraced and rallied behind it. I fear that the unraveling of integrity and honor will take us years, if not decades, to undo all of the damage he and his cronies have done. It makes me sad. Maggy

  6. yowsa on your cold, we are freezing here and it was only 45 the past few days with highs to 60. can't imagine feeding critters in that cold you have... as for us learning to get along, I doubt it will happen. just put more than one person in a room and there will be a divide. my husband and I are a perfect example, we love each other and have for 34 years, but rarely agree on anything and everything... that said I wish it would happen and agree with what you said above

  7. Hello Karen,

I agree with you 100%. I am actually scared about our country's future. I pray that 2020 does bring a leader who can heal us all.

  8. I worry that we are too late. But hopeful, knowing that some -- like the person you mentioned -- have come around, at least somewhat. I'm scared for our future as well and hoping we can have a leader who will take us out of this, not one who after Trump will drag us down more, but more sneakily, in a more dignified way, yet still the underlying issues remain. There are good people who can run in 2020 and I hope we pick the most viable to win.

As for the cold, frigid here, too. And it came on fast. At least it's the end of January -- only a few months to go. This could have started in November...

  9. Amen

High school boys forming swastika's with their bodies- HS boys taunting and ridiculing native americans- the ONLY non immigrants to this country. Makes me so very sad, so very worried. My kids say they will most likely not have children as they look forward to the world future.

Look to history to see where many civilizations failed and disappeared. It is possible.

  10. Every day a new incident. I just don't know how much more we, individually and as a nation, can endure. Started in 2015 election cycle, and now we're facing 22 months of campaign nastiness before 2020 election. Attacks begin within 24 hours after a candidate announces. I believe people's personalities are becoming more rude, intolerant and angry. Where I live gun shootings are epidemic and even traffic hit & run accidents are becoming commonplace.

I respect anyone who will take on T*rump and they ALL should be treated with gratitude. I wouldn't run for office, would you? America's whole election system needs modernizing (Electoral College), shortened (mercy for the people), and most importantly Citizens United needs to be eliminated by Constitutional Amendment (never gonna happen due to big money & incumbants at the trough.) Our State and Federal courts are being stacked against us. We've lost our way.
